I use Zipp carbon brake pads on my TT bike for my Zipp wheels. However, I train with aluminum rims.
My LBS told me to be careful and switch out my brake pads whenever switching between aluminum and carbon wheels. I thought they were crazy until I read, by KoolStop:
Kool Stop Dura-Type Carbon Brake Inserts
These are the pads that Reynolds and other carbon wheel manufacturers recommend for use on wheelsets with carbon braking surfaces. Make sure you replace your pads if you switch from wheels with alloy or ceramic braking surfaces to carbon surfaces since the small metal fibers that are caught in the pad can damage the carbon wheels.
Is everyone out there switching pads or can you just wipe the pads off with a little sand paper then rubbing alcohol to get the metal fibers off the pad?
I want to get some carbon wheels for my road bike but am not going to hassle with switching brake pads every time I switch between training and race wheels. With all the usual stuff to worry about, switching pads is not something I feel like dealing with.

Zipp recommends changing the pads when switching between Al and Carbon rims
. Here's what I do: I use Zipp pads and check the pads when I remove the training wheels and put on the race wheels, I rub my thumb over the pads to remove the dust, then I visually look for any metal stuck in the pads. I use fresh Mavic aluminum (quality) rims, so the issue is minimal. I did notice the cheaper rims have a tendency to splinter
, and I would only suggest using quality rims in this situation ... or use carbon rims for training and carry a tubular, which is a pretty good idea if you have the resources.

I have the Kool Stop Dura Type pad holders and pads. It takes me less than two minutes to change pads. This past Sunday after the FI TT was canx, off came the carbon wheels, on came the training wheels, a quick pad change and back in business.
