my avg watts on a 20 minute tt test is about 25 below the same test on my road bike. 225 vs 250. is this typical? or do i need to work on my position to produce more power? i have been riding a tt bike for about 3 months, as i put more miles in should the two numbers eventually be the same.

There could be several things happening to explain the 10% difference in road vs tt bike wattage. Certainly your tt position may compromise your power somewhat, atlhough it's probably much more aero, i.e. less drag. Your best tt position will be the optimum compromise between aero and allowing you to generate power.
A second possibility might be the terrain. I've found it easier to generate power on a steady climb than on flat or rolling terrain. To eliminate that variable try to test your wattage under the same conditions, to the extent possible. Frankly this is where the trainer is useful as you eliminate wind, rollers, etc.
Adaptation could still be taking place for you, and perhaps you're still building the muscle group used more in your aero position, typically the glutes for me.
Perhaps another possiblity is that your aero position might be restricting your breathing somewhat, but I think you would be aware of this if it were a significant issue.
Just some thoughts based on my experiences.
