Look on the main page, scroll down. Multiply the 20k times x2. Good general estimate.

The old benchmark for a 40K was to do it in an hour for non-elite racers. So that would be just over 24mph. But that was back in the pre-aero days. If you achieved that you did a pretty decent ride. With tt bars and decent wheels on a flat course and good wind conditions, an hour is easily within a Cat 5's ability, with any decent training time. The key is good bike position and decent wheels. The best tip for 40K is to resist the urge to hammer off the line. It should take 4-5 minutes to get up to your racing heartrate. (if you don't have a heartrate monitor, get one and use it, it's the cheapest/best tool for time trialing) If you go out too hard, it will be a tough final 10K. In the end, it depends on the course. If possible look at previous times for elite racers on the course and adjust your goal accordingly. If the course record is in the 52 minute range, 56-58 minutes for a Cat 5 is a realistic goal. Time trial racing is all about turning the power being put into the cranks into forward motion, the more efficent you get at it, the faster you will go. Good luck.

57-58 is normally the winning time, 40k, for a CAT 4, as per the 2002 and 2001 state TT results.
55-56 for CAT 3.
The last two winners of the mens Pro/1/2, 2001 and 2002 for 40k courses in SoCal, state TT, are in the 53 min range.
