Went up to see the recent Santiago Canyon TT and it looked like a lot of fun! I am a avid cyclists, but have only done club rides and distance events. Got a couple of metrics and centuries under my belt. Whats the best way to get into TT ... I suppose just show and ride, no?

Glad you enjoyed yourself. You have the right idea about getting stared, you dont need a TT bike and all that other stuff that comes later for now just show up and give it your best.
Try going to the next Piru TT on Dec. 3. it's laid back and an EZ place to get started. If your not licenced regester in the public division. Mention to Tren Moris the promotor that this is your first TT he will be more then happy walk you through the whole process. Good luck and have fun.

yeah man just show up and race. Just walk up to someone and ask what to do and they will be glad to show you what's going on. Some people are mean though, they will walk you through the registration process and then soundly crush you in the race. For example, you want to watch out for the likes of Matt Ford and his essence of speed that follows him where'er he goes! For your first TT though I would start with Tom's Farms since it's really straight forward and fun to boot. It's coming up here on Thanksgiving morning. Thanksgiving morning??!! you ask?? I know I know. It's actually works out pretty good. Race, get hungry, go home and feast and watch football the rest of the day and be a total lazy ass. It doesn't get any better than that my friend.
Piru is somewhat of a technical course and can often be very, VERY windy and for your first race can be somewhat daunting. I'm not going to say don't do it but for your first TT you can't beat Tom's Farms. It's a great course. My 2nd favorite next to Santiago Canyon. Anyway there's my $.02

Time trials are a blast! I show up with clip on's on my road bike and go out and try to beat my personal best. I'm already saving up for an actual TT ride becuase it's addictive. You can't believe the amount of support and encouragement you get from the other racers; it's unlike anything in road or mtb'ing.
See you out there!

I completely agree with Curtis! The encouragement and comradery I've encountered at time trial events can only be rivalled by what I've experienced at triathlons. Except time trialling is far less expensive as far as entry fees, and training costs are concerned.
It doesn't matter what kind of equipment you show up on either. We had a young guy show up on an old department store 10 speed, wearing jeans to do a tt, and he was given more support than anyone else out there!
I could add more but it's actually sunny and a whopping 5*celcius up here in Ontario Canada today, so I've got to finish work and get out riding.
Good Luck EH!
Peter
