I've recently joined the time trialling scene and have fallen in love with it. There's just something about putting out a solo effort and knowing YOU did everything possible to win...or lose.
I started cycling about 16 months ago. I used to ride a lot in high school on my cheap mountain bike...circa early 1990s. After many years, I fell back in love with cycling and liked the speed of being a roadie.
My name is Scott Gage. I built my ride about 5 months ago after lots of consideration as to the components I wanted (except for gearing apparently). I'll likely be the only guy at the SoCal TT series events on a Leader TT frame. I just don't see many around. Others seem to go more for brand name I guess. I've been out to Piru a couple times and really otherwise have done the bike portion of some local triathlons (really a TT for me).
I'm looking for new gearing ideas. I'm 6' 185 lbs. and have sprinter thighs. I can climb ok and prefer to do it in high rpms. As for the flats, I generally carry a high cadence all around in my riding. I just feel comfortable there. With that in mind, if anyone has gearing suggestions I'm open to hearing them. Other than Piru, I don't know the SoCal TT courses so your educated input is welcome.
Anyway, I'll be around reading through old posts and whatnot and hope to get to know some of you a little more. When I've been out to Piru it's kinda sucked being out there by myself and not knowing anyone. So, feel free to introduce yourself if you see me. I'm not likely going to just hop in a conversation I'm not apart of. =)
I've got a lot to learn and well...it might as well be the guys that have been doing this long enough.
The only pic of my TT bike I have is here...

...yes those are compacts on right now. That's why I said I'm looking for appropriate gears for the series courses.
Thanks all!

Hi Scott, welcome aboard.
Gearing-I run a 53-or 54 up front, and an 11-21 or 11-23 in the back depending on the course. basically, the 11-21 at Fiesta Island and 11-23 at Piru, Santiago and Tom's Farm-although you could run an 11-21 at Tom's.
I tend to spin around 92-95 rpms. Fiesta is nearly board flat, so its a good place to settle into the pain zone and just motor.
The bike looks good. I see a few Leaders down at Fiesta Island and also at States. There are definately some around.

Hard to quote myself and your response for reference but oh well. Thanks for the welcome! I'll probably stay with my 50/34 up front and 12/25 in back for now until I figure out the courses well enough to see where my gearing sits. I know out at the Santa Ana River Trail which I ride habitually on Saturdays I'm never spinning out of gears on the flats (which there's a lot of it). I usually do at least 40 miles down there but also do 60 or 80 on the road bike. I can't think of any point in time where I've been 25+ mph on the flats and needed more gearing. So we'll see. I'll certainly keep the recommendation in the back of my head. Thanks!
