I've been cycling for about 6 years now, and have found that time trialing is what I enjoy the most. A friend talked me into doing a duathlon, and I went in with limited run training, but I loved it, and have now committed to a year of Triathlon.
I've been training for about 6 weeks now, and have found my cycling performance has really sufferred. The legs just feel dead whenever I climb on the bike. I'm easing into the swimming(2x1km per wk), and running (2x5km per wk), and I feel energetic when I'm getting ready for a ride, but when I get out there I'm getting dropped like Cippolini in the Alpes.
Can I expect my cycling to suffer at the hands of the other 2 sports, or should I just quit whining and be more patient.
Thanks
Peter

Hey Peter- I did pro triathlons for about 4 years. I come from a swimming and cycling background. My experience with cross training the 3 sports was always one or two of the events felt better than the other. Very deffinetely you will experience increased levels of fatigue during your first 3 - 6 months of cross training. Be patient and ramp up the 3 events together slowly. As a cyclist your total daily output may have been 2-4 hours daily of straight cycling. Your body is fit for this endever so the impact on your energy level will be modest fatigue. However, 2- 4 hours of cross training will be felt quite differently. Yout body may not be used to the very different stimulation and overall fatigue is quite common. However, once you are fit for this, you will find yourself at a whole nother level of overall fitness. Be patient, the rewards in terms of fitness are quite amazing.

Thanks for the encouragement Craig. My interest in carrying on was beginning to drift a little, so your input came a good time. One positive from all the cross training has been the core strength I've been gaining, and the belt I've had to start wearing. I'm going to stick with it, and who knows, a personal best in our local TT might be a nice bonus!
Thanks again,
Peter
